What you start from changes the result
Transparency is a property of the file, but how cleanly it can be created depends almost entirely on the source. A logo or a screenshot with flat colour and hard edges cuts almost perfectly, because the boundary between subject and background is unambiguous. A studio product shot on a plain backdrop is nearly as good. A portrait taken in a busy room is the hard case, because hair breaks into hundreds of thin strands that partly overlap whatever is behind them.
It also matters whether the original ever had transparency to begin with. A PNG already carries an alpha channel and simply leaves it unused, so removal writes into a channel that is already there. A JPEG has no alpha channel at all, so the output has to be a different format — which is why every result here is a PNG regardless of what you put in.
PNG, WebP, and what not to do afterwards
PNG is the default output because it is lossless and its transparency is supported everywhere, including print workflows and email clients. WebP stores the same transparency far more efficiently and is the better choice for anything going onto a web page, at the cost of patchier support in older desktop software. Whichever you pick, do not re-save the finished file as JPEG: that format cannot hold an alpha channel, so your transparency would be flattened straight back onto a solid colour.
When automatic transparency needs help
- Hair, fur and fine fabric break into strands too thin to classify confidently, and usually want a little manual cleanup.
- Glass, smoke and anything semi-transparent is genuinely ambiguous — the background shows through the subject, so no single answer is right everywhere.
- Low contrast between subject and background gives the model almost nothing to separate on.
- Heavily compressed source images carry edge artefacts that survive into the cutout, so start from the best copy you have.
