Why avatars break, and what transparency fixes
Every platform crops an avatar to its own shape and shows it against its own background. The same photo becomes a circle on one service and a rounded square on another, sitting on white in one app and near-black in the next. A photo with a fixed background has to look right in all of those situations at once, and the corners are usually where it fails — a background that reached the edge of a square gets sliced into odd crescents by a circular mask.
A transparent cutout removes the problem by removing the background entirely. You can hand the platform a cutout on a colour you chose, or place the same cutout on different colours for different services from a single file. It also means you can change the backdrop later without redoing the cutout.
What to upload, and why the file may not stay transparent
Export PNG for the master file. Be aware that many platforms flatten uploaded avatars onto their own background — commonly white — and some re-encode to JPEG entirely, which discards transparency altogether. Because of that, the reliable approach is to place your cutout onto the background colour you actually want and upload that, keeping the transparent PNG as the master you can recolour later. Upload a reasonably large square image, around 800 by 800 pixels, since platforms downscale but never add detail back.
What makes a portrait harder to cut out
- Loose or curly hair against a detailed background is the classic hard case, and normally wants a little manual tidying.
- Dark hair or clothing against a dark background leaves very little contrast for the model to find an edge in.
- Glasses with strong reflections blur where the face ends and the background begins.
- Motion blur or a very low-light photo softens every edge, and a soft edge is guessed at rather than detected.
