Why a transparent JPG is impossible — and what to do instead
Searching for a transparent JPG turns up plenty of tools, but the format itself cannot do it. A JPG holds three channels per pixel — red, green and blue — and has no alpha channel in which to record opacity. Transparency is opacity information, so a JPG has literally nowhere to put it. This is a property of the file format, not a shortcoming of any particular editor.
What people actually want is JPG in, transparent PNG out, and that is exactly what happens here. Clear Canvas reads the JPG, uses an AI segmentation model to decide which pixels are the subject, and writes a new PNG whose background pixels are fully transparent. All of it runs inside your browser, so the original photo never leaves your device.
PNG or WebP for the result
PNG is the safe default — lossless, transparent and readable by everything, including older print workflows. WebP carries the same transparency in a much smaller file and is supported by every current browser, which makes it the better pick for web use. The one option to avoid is saving the finished cutout back to JPG, which discards the alpha channel and composites your subject onto a solid background all over again.
When the conversion needs a second pass
- A JPG that has been saved and re-saved several times carries compression artefacts along every edge, and those survive into the cutout. Use the least-compressed copy you can find.
- Subjects that blend into their surroundings — a grey coat against a grey wall — give the model very little edge signal to work from.
- Hair, fur and fine detail come out usable but rarely perfect from any automatic tool, whatever it costs.
- Smoke, glass and other semi-transparent subjects are genuinely ambiguous: the background is visible through them, so any single answer will be wrong somewhere.
