What makes a logo file 'transparent'
A transparent logo is one whose background pixels carry an alpha value of zero, so nothing is painted there and whatever sits behind shows through. Most logos are not delivered that way. They arrive as a JPG from a designer, screenshotted from a website, or exported from a slide deck — all of which bake a solid white or coloured rectangle in behind the mark.
Clearing that rectangle is what makes a logo usable on a coloured header, over a photograph, on a dark-mode site, or on printed material that is not white. Clear Canvas detects the mark, clears everything around it, and exports a PNG with a real alpha channel — all in your browser, which matters when the file is unreleased brand work.
PNG for logos, and when you really want SVG
Export as PNG. It is lossless, so the hard edges and flat colour areas typical of a logo stay crisp, and its transparency is universally supported. Do keep in mind that any raster format has a fixed resolution: if you need the logo at billboard size, or want to recolour it later, the real answer is a vector SVG from the original design file. Background removal gives you a high-quality raster cutout, not a vector, so reach for it when the original vector is not available to you.
Where logo cutouts need care
- Marks built from thin strokes, hairlines or small serif text can lose weight at the edges. Start from the largest version you have rather than a favicon.
- Drop shadows and outer glows are read as background and removed with it, which changes the look of the mark.
- A logo whose own colours include the background colour — white lettering on a white card — offers no reliable edge to detect.
- Gradients that fade out towards the background colour get cut wherever the model judges the edge to be, which may not be where the designer intended.
