Clear Canvas makes it effortless to remove backgrounds from PNG images. Whether you have a logo, icon, or photo saved as PNG, our AI detects the subject and removes everything else — giving you a clean transparent background. Since PNG already supports transparency, you get pixel-perfect results every time.

Why Use Clear Canvas

  • Preserves PNG transparency and quality
  • AI detects subjects with precision — even complex edges
  • Great for logos, icons, product images, and portraits
  • Runs entirely in your browser — no server processing
  • No sign-up, no watermarks, completely free
  • Download the result as a transparent PNG immediately

How It Works

  1. 1

    Upload your PNG

Drag and drop your PNG file or click to select it from your device.

  2. 2

    Background is removed

The AI processes your PNG locally and removes the background.

  3. 3

Save your transparent PNG — ready for use in any project.

What removing a PNG background actually changes

A PNG already has an alpha channel: a fourth value per pixel that records how opaque that pixel is. What most PNGs lack is any use of it. Exported from a phone, captured as a screenshot or saved out of a document, every pixel is set to fully opaque — so the file supports transparency without containing any.

Removing the background means writing real values into the channel that was already sitting there. That makes PNG the easiest possible starting point: there is no lossy compression working against you and no format conversion to worry about. Clear Canvas identifies the subject, sets every background pixel to fully transparent, and re-encodes the PNG on your device.

Keeping your transparent PNG a sensible size

Transparent PNGs are larger than the JPEGs they often replace, because PNG compression is lossless and the alpha channel adds a fourth value to every single pixel. If the result is bound for a website, converting to WebP after removal typically halves the file size while preserving transparency exactly. Keep the PNG for print, for design files, and anywhere the image will be opened and edited again.

Where PNG background removal struggles

  • Screenshots of interfaces usually carry soft drop shadows. Those read as background and are removed with it, so the cutout can look flatter than the original did.
  • PNGs that already contain partial transparency give the model no consistent background to separate from, and subject detection becomes unreliable.
  • Fine hair and fur against a detailed background remain the hardest case, and normally want a little manual touch-up afterwards.
  • Upscaled or heavily resized PNGs have soft, invented edges that the model has to guess at. A smaller original at its native resolution cuts more cleanly than a big blurry one.
