Why a JPEG can never be transparent
A JPEG stores three values for every pixel — red, green and blue. There is no fourth value for opacity, and opacity is what transparency actually is. That is why no setting inside a JPEG can make its background disappear: the format has nowhere to record which pixels should be see-through. Every "transparent JPEG" you have come across was really a PNG or a WebP wearing the wrong name.
Removing a background therefore always means changing format. Clear Canvas reads your JPEG, works out which pixels belong to the subject, and writes a new PNG with a genuine alpha channel where the background used to be. Your original file is left untouched, and because the model runs inside your browser the photo is never uploaded to anyone.
Which format to save
Save as PNG when you need dependable transparency — it is lossless and understood by every application, which matters for logos, product shots and anything that will sit on a coloured surface. WebP holds the same transparency in a noticeably smaller file and every current browser supports it, so it is the better choice for images heading straight onto a web page. The one thing to avoid is saving back to JPEG, which throws away the alpha channel and flattens your subject onto a solid colour again.
Where JPEG background removal struggles
- Heavy compression leaves blocky artefacts along every edge. The background comes away cleanly but those artefacts stay in the cutout, so start from the highest-quality copy you have rather than one that has been re-saved or passed through a messaging app.
- Fine hair, fur and feathers against a busy background are the hardest case for any automatic tool. Expect a usable cutout that still wants a little manual tidying for portrait work.
- Glass, water and other see-through subjects are genuinely ambiguous, because the background really is visible through them. No single answer is correct everywhere in the image.
- Very low contrast — a white shirt against a white wall — gives the model almost nothing to separate on, and edges may wander.
