What marketplaces actually require
Amazon, Etsy, Shopify and eBay all build their product grids on the assumption that the main image shows the product and nothing else. Amazon in particular requires a pure white background on the main image in most categories, and even where no rule is broken, inconsistent backgrounds across a catalogue make a storefront look ragged before a shopper has read a single price.
Removing the background gives you both options from one file: a transparent PNG you can drop onto any surface, or that same cutout flattened onto pure white for a marketplace main image. Transparent PNG or flat white
Keep a transparent PNG as your master — it can be composited onto white, onto a brand colour, or into a lifestyle scene later without redoing the work. Export flattened white JPEGs from that master for marketplace main images, where a solid background is required and size limits are tighter. WebP is a good choice for your own storefront but is not accepted by every marketplace, so check the platform specification before using it in a live listing.
Product photography that resists automatic cutouts
- Glass, bottles and anything see-through are genuinely ambiguous, because the background is visible through the product itself. No automatic cut is fully correct.
- Jewellery and other reflective items pick up the colour of the surface they were shot on, and that reflected colour is easily read as background.
- A product photographed on a surface close to its own colour leaves the model very little contrast to work with.
- Soft contact shadows are removed along with the background. If a listing reads better with the product grounded, you will need to add a shadow back afterwards.
